Crambo Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 4, 2026
Crambo ("we", "our", "us") is a Chrome browser extension that captures audio from online lecture platforms to generate AI-powered study materials. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Crambo never records audio without your explicit action. You must click "Start Capturing" to begin any recording. There is no background recording, no silent capture, and no passive data collection.
1. What Data We Collect
When you use Crambo, the following data is collected only when you explicitly initiate a capture:
- Tab Audio: Audio from the active browser tab is recorded when you click "Start Capturing" and stops when you click "Stop Capturing".
- Screenshots: Visible tab screenshots are taken only when you click the "Screenshot" button, or optionally when a slide change is detected during an active capture session.
- Page Metadata: The URL and title of the page being captured, the detected platform (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet), the duration of the recording, and the timestamp.
- Authentication Token: A session token is stored locally in your browser to authenticate with your Crambo account.
2. How We Use Your Data
- Captured audio and screenshots are uploaded to your personal Crambo account at crambo.app.
- Audio is processed through AI services to generate study guides, quizzes, and flashcards for your personal use.
- Page metadata is used to organize your lectures by course and platform.
- We do not sell, share, or distribute your lecture recordings or study materials to any third party.
3. Data Storage
- Local storage: Your authentication token is stored in Chrome's local storage (
chrome.storage.local). No audio or screenshots are stored locally after upload.
- Server storage: Uploaded audio and screenshots are stored securely on Crambo's servers and are accessible only to your authenticated account.
- Audio files are processed and may be deleted after study materials are generated, in accordance with our data retention policy.
4. Data Sharing
- Your data is transmitted only to crambo.app (our web application) over encrypted HTTPS connections.
- Audio is processed through third-party AI services (for transcription and study material generation) as part of the Crambo service. These providers process data under contract and do not retain your content.
- We do not sell your data to advertisers or any third party.
5. Permissions Explained
- tabCapture: Required to record audio from lecture tabs. Audio is captured only on your explicit request and is transmitted only to your Crambo account.
- activeTab: Required to take screenshots of the current tab when you press the Screenshot button.
- offscreen: Required for audio processing. Chrome's Manifest V3 architecture requires an offscreen document to process audio streams.
- storage: Used to store your authentication token locally in your browser.
- notifications: Used to notify you when your lecture has been uploaded and when your study guide is ready.
- Host permissions (Zoom, Meet, Teams, Brightspace, Panopto, Kaltura): Required to detect when you are on a supported lecture platform and to run the content script that identifies video/audio elements on the page.
6. What We Do NOT Do
- We do not record audio in the background or without your knowledge.
- We do not capture audio from tabs other than the one you are actively viewing.
- We do not track your browsing history or activity on any website.
- We do not collect personal information beyond what is needed to operate the service.
- We do not inject ads or modify web page content.
7. Your Rights
- You can disconnect your Crambo account from the extension at any time using the "Disconnect" button in the popup.
- You can delete your account and all associated data by contacting us at privacy@crambo.app.
- You can uninstall the extension at any time, which removes all locally stored data.
8. Children's Privacy
Crambo is designed for post-secondary students (ages 18+). We do not knowingly collect data from children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at privacy@crambo.app.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
